The purpose of this project is to make us think of how an ordinary object may be more than what is seems. Symbol means a object that means something completely different. Motif is a recurring element that has a symbolic mean. The process of making our posture was pretty easy but time consuming. We wrote each word down and thought of how the word was used in the book and what one word best described it. After that we put examples of how the symbols were like the words we picked to describe it.
The Flowers we thought were best described by the word hopeful. The flowers give hope to the people in the story. Like how there is a small patch of flowers at the Ewell house and the colors bring hope to the place that is run down. The flowers also bring hope to Mrs. Buboes. They help her get her mind off pain and the help her get over her addiction. After Miss Maudie's house burns down, she is hopeful to be able rebuild her house smaller so that she may plate even more flowers. Flowers really bring hope to the town of Maycomb in a time when it is need.
My group felt that the Mockingbird represented innocence. Some examples from the book that we felt show this include when Tom Robinson is innocent but the jury says that he guilty. Another is when people spread rumors about Boo Radley when he can't defend himself against the rumors. The last example we had is when the children who are innocent have to see the truth about society. They children who are completely innocent see that the world is a cruel place.
The Morphodite represents metamorphose. Boo is thought to be a monster until he reveals what his true personality is to everyone. It shows that people can be two sided and no one would ever know. The next example is Mrs Debose. She is addicted to morphine but most people can not see that she is nor do they know that she is. Morphodite basically means that should never judge a person until just by how they look or rumors about them.
The final word on wheel which is Tim Robinson represent instability. One example is how there is no equality between races in Maycomb. Another example is that Tim is not given a chance to show if he really sick. He shot without a chance to defend himself. The town also depends on one man to deal with the problems of the town. They would rather let just one person deal with it.
The symbols in the book really make the book more interesting than what it would be if there weren't any. They all make people think things through when they are reading. They also make things easier to understand when you read a book. The symbols we had on our wheel are really important in To Kill A Mockingbird.
